Atanas Ivanov Kolev ( born 15 of July 1967) is a Bulgarian  chess grandmaster with a more than 30 years of practice. He started at the age of 10 and became an international master (IM) in 1988. He won the grandmaster title(GM) in 1993 and can claim more than 60 victories in international chess tournaments throughout the world.

Grandmaster Kolev had worked as a coach of the Bulgarian women’s  national team and also had helped some of the best Bulgarian chess players (like ex –world championGM Antoaneta StefanovaGM Kiril GeorgievGM Vasil Spasov, etc.). He helps and works with talented young players in the last years.

Kolev and fellow Bulgarian grandmaster Kiril Georgiev are co-authors of The Sharpest Sicilian, a book about the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense, which was published in 2007. The book follows the structure of another Chess Stars publication, The Safest Sicilian. Every system is examined in a separate part which contains three chapters. First, Quick Repertoire provides you with the vital information that you need to start playing the variation. Step by Step is the reference chapter with all branches covered in depth. The Complete Games chapters include altogether 50 commented games which display typical ideas or pawn structures. You’ll find a lot of original analysis on the most critical positions of the Najdorf. Chapters about the English Attack 6 Be3 and the Classical 6 Be2 as well as 6 a4 are written by grandmaster Atanas Kolev.  The rest of the book is written by grandmaster Kiril Georgiev. Kiril has been in the chess elite for 20 years with rating above 2650. He participated in 12 Olympiads, mostly as Bulgarian first board. In 2006, he took the bronze at the European championship.

Atanas and Macedonian grandmaster Trajko Nedev are co-authors of The Easiest Sicilian, a book about the Sveshnikov Variation of the Sicilian, which was published in 2008. The book presents a Black repertoire with 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6, based on the most aggressive Sveshnikov lines. It also covers The Rossolimo (3 Bb5) and Alapin (3 c3). The material is up-to-date to April 10. The authors propose major novelties in practically all topical lines. The repertoire avoids solid, but passive variations. They are left for backup lines while the authors’ recommendation goes for the most challenging options. “Currently I do not see any serious theoretical problems for Black” claims Kolev in the foreword. In the Rossolimo the authors also share completely new ideas, developed by them.

Kolev won the 33rd Plovdiv Open 2011, shared first place with GM Cheparinov at Albena Open 2011, won the 20th annual Midway Championship in Chicago 2011, and theFirst Annual International Chess Festival in Detroit 2011. He won five of the six tournaments he played in 2011.
